malicious gossip

“Without wood a fire goes out;
without a gossip a quarrel dies down.
21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire,
so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife” (Proverbs 26:20-21).

This morning I awoke to the news of a fire that started this morning above the city of Glendora, CA. A beautiful area, hiked often by my daughter and her friends from Azusa Pacific – that is now raging with fire. The conditions are perfect for fire: Hot dry winds, record drought, and 80 degree + temperatures. The local residents that are being interviewed all shake their heads saying “it happened so fast”.

Yep. Fire is destructive and moves quickly, destroying everything in its wake – causing people to run. The psalmist reminds us that malicious gossip, cruel words, and a quarrelsome spirit have the same affect. They are destructive and divisive. Those in their path are cut down while the “fire” looks for new fuel in order to create new chaos.

Are you a fire fighter or a fire starter?
